About

My name is William. I write music, this website is here so you can listen to music and read my nonsense. That’s all, but if you want the full back story, read on…
Tasmania. You may not know where that is, but I was there – for roughly 4 weeks during winter 2008. I grew up in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia to be precise. But now I’m currently living in Melbourne, where the buildings are larger and you can do cool things like catch trams.
Ok so back to the winter 2008. I was in Tasmania as I had a university break, so was back at home with the folks. But it was cold and rather boring. You see I forgot that most of the people I once knew in Tasmania actually had things to do – like working, school or hiding downstairs playing sing-a-long to Bob Dylan. I needed something to do so I decided to start writing some funky tunes that were mainly electronic. Ok, they were awful, but at the time I thought they were awesome. I recorded my first song during an all nighter in what must have been barely 2 degrees. The song – ‘My Pet Dog Eats Custard For Breakfast’ went on to become a staple in the electronic genre… ok maybe it didn’t – but it definitely went on to become the most hated song in my family. My friend thought it was cool though – “Phat bass, great popcorn melody” he would say.
I ended up writing about 12 songs – recording violin and my voice through a laptop and then layering it all into this huge cake that looked really good but didn’t really taste as nice as it could have. But it was a fun album, titled ‘Pointing Gives You Power’ under the alias of ‘The Slinky Cat.’ I put it onto my old blog and managed to get about 50 downloads of it – not bad for a bedroom recorded piece of shit!
One of the other highlights (or the only other highlight!) was the song ‘There’s More To Life’ – based on the Loreal MenExpert Pierce Brosnan advertisement. You know the one where he narrates to himself and then rides a horse – pointing out into the distance? Well yeah anyway I mixed it up a bit, mashed it up and put it up onto youtube. I still can’t work out how it’s managed to have 3000+ views.
Ok, so that all happened. Made an album, put it on the web, exciting stuff! This is when things start to get a bit expensive. I picked up my own recording unit and a microphone so I could basically record anything I wanted – acoustic guitars, electric guitars, bass, violin, percussion, cats and vocals. I started really getting into the songwriting and took a more serious attitude towards it. Still using elements of electronic music, I’ve been layering my song structures on top of drum samples and been taking it from there. I started off doing mostly instrumentals but have now moved onto singing! I feel my voice is starting to get used to the constant pain I put it through – unfortunately I don’t think my flatmates will ever get used to it.
So that’s about all I guess, if you’ve made it to here you seriously must be bored out of your mind, its a pretty long spiel. There will be a cd coming out later this year, it’s going to include about 14 of my songs – about 50/50 vocal/instrumental. I still haven’t got a name for the album yet, or whether it will be self titled. It’ll be released onto roughly 100 copies and then after I get rid of them all I’ll launch the album online.
Yeah, sometime later this year – perhaps I should stop writing long biographies no one will read (except my sister who took the effort to change my all-nighter ramblings into something a little more coherent) and get on with it.
William.
